Halifax Regional Police is investigating a vehicle/pedestrian collision that occurred this morning in Dartmouth.

At 7:56 a.m., police responded to a vehicle/pedestrian collision at the intersection of Lakefront Road and Portland Street. A 23-year-old woman and a three-year-old boy were crossing Portland Street in a marked crosswalk when the boy was hit by a vehicle travelling east on Portland Street. The boy suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by EHS as a precaution.

The 23-year-old male driver was issued a summary offence ticket under section 125(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. This ticket carries a fine of $693.95 and four points on a driver’s license upon conviction.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Motorists are reminded to slow down, pay attention and adjust their driving for the conditions. There is a crosswalk at every intersection, whether it is marked or not, and drivers must yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road at marked crosswalks.
