SiRT Investigating Police Involved Shooting in Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the discharge of a firearm by a member of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) that resulted in the serious injury of an adult male in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the night of July 9, 2025, HRP officers responded to a call at a residence in the subdivision of Fairmount in Halifax, where an adult male had reportedly barricaded himself inside with another person known to him.
  • On the morning of July 10, 2025, HRP patrol units and the HRP Emergency Response Team were on the scene.
  • The adult male pointed a gun out of a window of the residence and an HRP officer discharged his firearm, striking the male.
  • RCMP Emergency Response Team arrived on the scene to provide assistance.
  • The suspect was arrested, and the other person in the home was removed safely.
  • The male was taken to the hospital with what are understood to be nonlife threatening injuries.

Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
