The Halifax Regional Municipality is pleased to announce the Dartmouth Sportsplex will officially reopen next month as the Zatzman Sportsplex.
The name change comes after a $750,000 donation to the facility, announced today by Mayor Mike Savage and the Zatzman family.
The well-established Dartmouth family was looking for a way to honour their patriarch, Joseph Zatzman, and the newly revitalized sports facility was a perfect fit.
“Our father’s life and devotion to Dartmouth was remarkable in many ways,” said Michael Zatzman. “His consistent goal throughout his life was to make Dartmouth a better place to live and work. This new facility – and what it means to the community – aligns perfectly with Dad’s life mission.”
The five-year donation ($150,000 per year) to facility operations includes a commitment to programming that will enhance and expand the community’s access to, and involvement in, the sports complex.
“The Zatzman family has been building community, especially in Dartmouth, for many years,” said Mayor Savage. “Joseph Zatzman’s remarkable life was marked by perseverance, success, and generosity – both as a citizen and as a dedicated public servant. I am delighted that the Zatzman family has chosen to recognize his great contributions by supporting the new Dartmouth Sportsplex.”
Dartmouth Sportsplex board chair Brad Smith said there’s something special about linking the Zatzman name to the recreation centre. “The Zatzman family has such a strong history of supporting and building the Dartmouth community. And to have this heritage continue with their support in the newly revitalized Zatzman Sportsplex is fitting of this legacy.”
The new Zatzman Sportsplex will reopen on Nova Scotia Heritage Day (Feb. 18), with regular operations starting on Monday, Feb. 25.
When fully operational, the facility will include a new double gymnasium, new fitness centre, new pool attractions – such as a new large waterslide, climbing walls, children’s splash area – and new community spaces.
About Joseph Zatzman
In 1934, Joe Zatzman, at only 22-years-old, bought a small grocery store in Dartmouth, on the corner of Portland Street and Victoria Road. His family had no money at that time, but his father was somehow able to sign a note for $500 at the Royal Bank for Joe to use to start his store.
The business, called the Community Groceteria, entailed long hours of work, endless stock taking, and constant catering to customer demands. From these humble beginnings, Joe slowly worked his way up the financial ladder. His honesty, integrity, and willingness to help people in need was quickly noted by the community. Slowly but surely Joe was encouraged to take a more active role in the leadership of Dartmouth, serving four terms as an alderman, and two terms as mayor. His accomplishments were many, but some stand out as visionary, most particularly the creation of Burnside Industrial Park.
He also taught his family to become involved in community service, and his son, Michael, followed his example through his life in business, politics, and volunteerism in Halifax and Dartmouth.

Le changement de nom provient d’un don de 750 000 dollars à l’installation, annoncé aujourd’hui par le maire Mike Savage et la famille Zatzman.
La famille bien établie de Dartmouth cherchait une manière d’honorer leur patriarche, Joseph Zatzman, et l’installation sportive nouvellement revitalisée convenait parfaitement.
« La vie et le dévouement de notre père envers Dartmouth étaient remarquables à de nombreux égards », dit Michael Zatzman. « Son objectif pendant toute sa vie a été de faire de Dartmouth un meilleur endroit où vivre et travailler. Cette nouvelle installation – et ce qu’elle signifie pour la communauté – s’harmonise parfaitement avec la mission de vie de mon père. »
Le don étalé sur cinq ans (150 000 dollars par année) pour les opérations de l’installation comprend un engagement envers les programmes qui amélioreront et agrandiront l’accès de la communauté au complexe sportif et leur engagement envers celui-ci.
« La famille Zatzman renforce la communauté, en particulier à Dartmouth, depuis de nombreuses années », dit le maire Savage. « La vie remarquable de Joseph Zatzman a été marquée par la persévérance, le succès et la générosité – en tant que citoyen et fonctionnaire dévoué. Je suis ravi que la famille Zatzman ait choisi de reconnaître ses grandes contributions en appuyant le nouveau Dartmouth Sportsplex. »
Le président du conseil du Dartmouth Sportsplex, Brad Smith, dit qu’il y a quelque chose de spécial sur le fait de lier le nom Zatzman au centre récréatif. « La famille Zatzman a une solide histoire en ce qui concerne l’appui et le renforcement de la communauté de Dartmouth. Et avoir cet héritage qui continue avec leur appui au Zatzman Sportsplex nouvellement revitalisé, représente un merveilleux hommage. »
Le nouveau Zatzman Sportsplex rouvrira le Jour du patrimoine en Nouvelle-Écosse (18 février) avec un fonctionnement normal à partir du lundi 25 février.
Lorsqu’elle sera complètement opérationnelle, l’installation comprendra un gymnase double, un nouveau centre de conditionnement physique, de nouvelles attractions pour la piscine – comme une nouvelle glissade d’eau, des murs d’escalade, une aire de jeux d’eau pour les enfants – et de nouveaux espaces communautaires.

En 1934, Joe Zatzman, alors qu’il avait seulement 22 ans, a acheté une petite épicerie à Dartmouth, sur le coin de la rue Portland et du chemin Victoria. Sa famille n’avait pas d’argent à ce moment, mais son père a été capable de signer un billet pour 500 dollars à la Banque Royale afin que Joe puisse ouvrir son magasin.
L’entreprise, appelée la Community Groceteria, l’obligeait à travailler de longues heures, à dresser un inventaire sans fin et à servir constamment les demandes de la clientèle. De ces humbles débuts, Joe a lentement commencé à escalader l’échelle salariale. Son honnêteté, son intégrité et sa volonté d’aider les personnes dans le besoin ont rapidement été prises en note par la communauté. Lentement mais sûrement, Joe a été encouragé à prendre un rôle plus actif dans le leadership de Dartmouth. Il a servi quatre mandats en tant que conseiller et deux mandats en tant que maire. Ses réalisations ont été nombreuses, mais quelques-unes en ressortent comme visionnaires, en particulier la création du parc industriel Burnside.
Il a aussi appris à sa famille à s’engager dans la communauté et son fils, Michael, a suivi son exemple au long de sa vie dans les affaires, la politique et le bénévolat à Halifax et à Dartmouth.
