The Halifax Regional Municipality provides an annual contribution of $400,000 in support of the YMCA in the administration of its Snow Removal Program for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities. This funding allows the YMCA to serve about 450 households.
On Dec. 11, 2018, Halifax Regional Council voted to allocate an additional $200,000 toward the program for the current winter season, creating approximately 225 more spaces for a total of more than 675 eligible residential properties.
The snow removal program is available to seniors (65 years of age or older) and persons with disabilities in the Halifax region who also meet the criteria below. The program applies to residential properties only – commercial properties are ineligible.
- Participants must reside in a single dwelling home which is owned or rented
- The total gross household income of all people living on the premises must not exceed $32,000
- The program is NOT available to landlords
How it works
The program offers assistance to clear snow from steps and walkways, including:
- Front and back steps
- Access to fuel tanks
NOTE: The program does not apply to the clearing of driveways.
The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. When it reaches maximum capacity, registration in the program will come to a close and individuals will be placed on a wait list. Please note that the YMCA only considers applications which include proper documentation.
