Insuring Heritage Properties

An important aspect of protecting your heritage property is through insurance. Sometimes the topic of insuring heritage properties can create confusion for property owners or insurers. This page provides a collection of resources to help property owners and insurers clear up questions they may have.

Resources for Insuring Heritage Properties

To assist in addressing some common misunderstandings and concerns, The National Trust for Canada has conducted research and developed a list of resources for property owners looking to insure their heritage property.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has also developed this guide on insuring your heritage home, and suggests conducting a yearly risk prospectus for your property using this fillable form.

Total Loss and De-Registration

In the case of accidental total loss of a heritage building and its character-defining elements (such as loss by fire or natural disaster), a property owner may apply to de-register their property per Section 16 of Nova Scotia's Heritage Property Act. To apply to de-register a property after a loss, please contact HRM heritage staff.

If you have any further questions about insurance and the Heritage Property Act, please contact Nova Scotia provincial heritage staff at kevin.barrett@novascotia.ca or 902-223-5712.
