Whether it’s service alerts, emergency notifications, public engagement opportunities or updates on programs and events, residents have more ways than ever to stay connected with the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The municipality uses a range of tools, channels and platforms to share information and receive feedback from residents. Find the channel best suited to your needs.
Social media platforms
The municipality has a presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and, most recently, Bluesky. These platforms offer an immediate and interactive way to inform the community about events, programs, services, initiatives, career and volunteer opportunities and public safety information while also providing a space for public engagement.
311
311 is the municipality’s contact centre. Residents can contact 311 via phone, mail, email or online for a variety of information or non-emergency service requests.
Mass notification system
hfxALERT is the municipality’s mass notification system for informing residents about emergencies and operations updates. It sends urgent and non-urgent notifications from municipal Emergency Management, Halifax Regional Police, Halifax Fire & Emergency, as well as municipal winter parking ban notifications. It’s also used by Halifax Water, the municipally owned water utility.
RSS feeds
An RSS feed is a simple way to get updates from websites without having to visit them. Instead of checking a site every day, you can subscribe to its RSS feeds using an RSS reader app. When the site posts something new, it shows up in your reader.
Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
Posted publicly to halifax.ca/news, Bluesky (as of June 11, 2025) and RSS feeds. Depending on the content/topic of the PSA, information may be shared on other social media channels. Note that, as of July 14, 2025, the use of X as a platform will be discontinued.
Applications
The municipality also has apps that residents can download to their phone or tablet, including the HFXGO Transit App, Halifax Transit’s mobile fare payment app, and the Halifax Recycles App, where you can search What Goes Where, sign up for weekly reminders and service alerts, or print a calendar customized for your address.
Online community engagement platform
Shape Your City Halifax is the municipality’s online community engagement platform where residents share thoughts, ideas and feedback on decision-making, planning and policy formation.
Website
halifax.ca houses all municipal information about programs and services and offers direct access to a suite of self-serve online submission forms for topics that include booking a facility, applying for a grant or permit, reporting damage in a park, requesting a crosswalk, litter bin or streetlighting, among many others.
