Board of Police Commissioners

The Board of Police Commissioners is the governing body of the Halifax Regional Police Service and additionally functions as an advisory board for the RCMP who provide a contractual service to HRM. The Board provides civilian governance, functioning much as a board of directors. As a statutory body, the Board looks to Section 55 of the Nova Scotia Police Act for its jurisdiction, power and duties. Each member of the Board is required to take an oath of office and adhere to a code of conduct prescribed by the regulations. A police records check is required of all members of the Board prior to taking office.

Committee's Role

• In consultation with the HRP Chief of Police and the RCMP Chief Superintendent, the Board establishes the objectives and priorities of the HRM Police Service and RCMP services in HRM.
• Approves the budget as prepared and presented by the Chief of Police, prior to its submission to Regional Council for approval.
• Serves as a link between the community and police services.
