Heads Up Halifax and Crosswalk Safety Awareness
Heads Up Halifax is a campaign designed to help raise awareness about the responsibility shared by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians when it comes to crossing the street safely. Heads Up Halifax also promoted Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day (CSAD) on November 19, 2018. Drivers and pedestrians were encouraged throughout the day to be even more mindful of crosswalk safety and to share their safe crosswalk experiences using the #headsuphalifax hashtag (only when it's safe to do so!).
We're now looking for some bright ideas from the public to make crosswalks safer for everyone. UPDATE January 3, 2019: The deadline to submit a proposal is extended to January 17, 2019 to offset the holiday period within the campaign.
Let’s put our heads together, Halifax
We believe our communities can do amazing things, so we’re asking you: how can we improve crosswalk safety? This year’s initiative is all about finding new ideas to promote crosswalk safety awareness and encourage safer behaviour. If you want to make a real difference in your community, here’s your chance — funding is available to bring the best ideas to life! The following FAQs explain the initiative and what we're looking for in a great idea.
How does the initiative work?
We want ideas from the people who walk, drive, and bike through crosswalks every day. If you have an idea on how you can make our crosswalks safer, you can download a submission form, complete and submit it after reading the official rules. Our panel of judges will select the best ideas, which will be funded by Heads Up Halifax.
Who can submit a proposal?
While we want everyone with a bright idea to be engaged in the initiative, we can only accept proposals from (and make funding payments to) qualifying associations residing in the Halifax Regional Municipality that will implement the proposal. Qualifying associations are a charitable, nursing, medical, athletic, educational, environmental, cultural, community, fraternal, recreational, religious, sporting or social organization that is registered as:
- a non-profit incorporated under an Act of the Nova Scotia Legislature; or
- a non-profit incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (2009); or
- a non-profit association incorporated under the Co-operative Associations Act (1989);
- a society incorporated under the Societies Act (1989);
- a charity registered under the Income Tax Act (Canada).
The qualifying associations must also be registered for at least one (1) year prior to January 17, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. AT (Note: registration must be current; organizations whose registration has expired, in default or revoked will be ineligible to be a Qualifying Association).
Individuals with a bright idea for crosswalk safety must engage and partner with a qualifying association (as described above) to complete an eligible submission.
How much funding will each successful proposal receive?
The Funding Amounts available are as follows:
- Four (4) funding amounts – each consisting of $5,000 CAD that must be used by the qualifying association towards implementing the proposal;
- Six (6) funding amounts – each consisting of $2,500 CAD that must be used by the qualifying association towards implementing the proposal;
- Fifteen (15) funding amounts – each consisting of $1,000 CAD that must be used by the qualifying association towards implementing the proposal.
When/where can I submit my ideas?
Submissions kick off with Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day on November 19, 2018, and the deadline to submit is January 17, 2019. Our judges will evaluate and announce the winners in March 2019. What kinds of ideas are you looking for?
We want ideas that are innovative or educational (or both!) that will be implemented by the qualifying association using the initiative's funding. We believe the best ideas will either encourage safer behaviour or improve the ways in which people currently use crosswalks.
What makes for a good idea?
We want to hear all your great ideas. That said, submissions are more likely to receive funding if they are:
Clearly communicated: How does your idea work and how will it directly improve crosswalk safety for both drivers and pedestrians?
Viable: We love that you think big but consider what resources you’ll need to bring your idea to life.
Scalable: Can your idea be used in more than one community throughout the Halifax region?
Long-lasting: Will your idea improve crosswalk safety for years to come?
How will proposals be assessed?
A panel will judge each eligible submission on the basis of the following weighted criteria:
- Feasibility (40%)
- Originality and Creativity (20%)
- Community Impact — reach and potential (30%)
- Focus on shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians (10%)
Who decides which ideas receive funding?
Our panel of judges will consist of municipal elected officials, staff, and community leaders vested in crosswalk safety.
