The municipality is now accepting requests to mark designated smoking areas (DSAs) on municipal property. While we expect to review each request within 10 business days, we also anticipate a significant number of requests starting on October 5. We appreciate your patience as we process each new request.
Smoking on private property will continue to be at the discretion and responsibility of the property owner, although all smoking in any location must adhere to the Province of Nova Scotia’s Smoke-free Places Act, which requires (in addition to other considerations including accessibility, lighting, impact on snow clearing, safe distance from intersections/ driveways, etc.) that all indoor workplaces and public places, outdoor licensed areas and patios of all restaurants, lounges, beverage rooms and cabarets be smoke-free.
The municipality's assessment of any DSA request must also consider mitigating all nuisances and risks to all users of the location.
