Commuter Data Apps

In an effort to better understand mobility patterns around the region, Halifax Regional Municipality has developed two apps using Journey to Work Data from Statistics Canada from census years 2006, 2011, and 2016. These apps help us to better understand where people commute from, where they commute to, and the mobility options they use to get there.  We have made these apps public to make it easier for the public to access and view this data at a greater level of detail, especially as we implement the Integrated Mobility Plan and see changes to mobility patterns in Halifax over time.

Origin/Destination Visualizer

The Origin/Destination (O/D) Visualizer shows where people commute from (origin) and where they are commuting to (destination) using all modes of transportation based on data from 2016. This app provides insights into commuting patterns across the region, which informs how we plan for transit, active transportation, and land use in Halifax.

Mode Share App

Mode share is the proportion of people who walk, roll, cycle, use transit, carpool, and drive. As part of the Integrated Mobility Plan, our goal is to increase the number of people using more sustainable modes of transportation like active transportation and transit and to reduce the number of people driving alone to work or school.

The Mode Share App shows the proportion of people using each mobility option at a Census Tract, Consolidated Traffic Zone, and Business Improvement District level and uses data from the 2006, 2011, and 2016 censuses.
